the journey
The start of my journey began like this. After washing and waxing my car one afternoon, I noticed that the headlights were beginning to look cloudy. Troubled by this, I decided to search online for tips on ‘How to clean cloudy headlights.’ Once I hit the enter button on my computer, a vast amount of information appeared before me. Cleaning tips included using toothpaste,

polishes, bug sprays, oil lubricants, and even sandpaper. I also discovered that automotive manufacturers had produced a UV lens protector for the outside of the headlight lens to protect it from the sun’s rays – its purpose being to keep the headlight from oxidizing and turning yellow. Surprised by this particular finding, I quickly thought to myself – ‘If all headlights are protected, why do they go yellow or cloudy?’ With this question in mind, I then started delving deeper into the subject – even speaking to polymer experts. Like a dog with a bone, I was determined to find out what was causing the clouding of headlights and, with the help of some colleagues, researched the subject. A huge amount of time was spent researching and performing tests relating to this problem. We knew it was logical to assume that the weather played a significant role in affecting the condition of the headlights – but later discovered that it was not the only cause.

Looking further into the subject of cloudy headlights, we discovered oxidation was the main culprit for the deterioration of the surface of the headlights. We found that over time, oxidation builds up on the ‘outside’ of the lens and forms a hardened shell (on the plastic) – clouding the headlight. This oxidation build-up is almost impossible to remove.

This led us to the next stage of research, which was to find a solution for removing the oxidation without damaging the UV lens protector and headlight. We decided to start with today’s most common cleaning methods for headlights. This was done by testing a whole range of chemicals, polishes, and compounds on polycarbonate. We also wanted to see how well these substances would perform on UV lens protectors. When the results came back, we discovered that although the oxidation was removed in some cases – it was not always 100% successful and sometimes weakened the surface of the headlight; resulting in faster oxidation formation. Using polishes, pastes, and compounds that contained medium to large-size particles could cut through or wear down the UV lens protectors – allowing oxidation build-up to form much faster than before. Using products which contained acetone, deet, and oil lubricants could cause the polycarbonate lens to expand, creating tiny micro fractures in the plastic and, therefore, causing irreparable damage to the headlight. Upon reviewing these results, we realized that it was now time to find the solutions to this complex problem.

It is one thing to discover the drawbacks of headlight cleaning, but quite another to meet the challenge of finding the solution to this puzzle. We realized that we needed to find a substance that would not only remove oxidation from headlights but – more importantly – would remove it without harming the UV lens protector and the headlight itself.

It was decided that the best course of action would be to bring in some of the best formulators in this line of work. These experts would be given the task of producing a non-abrasive headlight cleaner which would: remove the oxidation on the headlight, remove the oxidation easily and quickly, and remove oxidation without damaging the headlight. Needless to say, this was no easy task for the formulators, but with skill, hard work, and dedication, they managed to invent a cutting-edge product. Finally, after a long and (sometimes) difficult journey, Deoxinator was created – the first true cleaner specifically designed for headlights. This unique, professional-strength, non-abrasive headlight cleaner removes oxidation without harming the UV lens protector or the lens. Deoxinator cleans so fast, you can clean both headlights in less than a minute. At last, a new and successful solution to cleaning cloudy headlights.
